Cold Storage Facility CCS Installation: Meeting Unique Environmental Challenges

Recently, our team was tasked with installing a Ceiling Containment System (CCS) inside a refrigerated warehouse - a project that tested every aspect of our installation process and showcased the value of an experienced partner like Nusens.

Worker Conditions & Productivity

Working in sub-zero conditions means more than just discomfort. Our crews were outfitted in full winter gear, which significantly slowed tasks requiring dexterity. To ensure safety and productivity, we rotated teams regularly, preventing fatigue in the extreme cold. This approach protected workers while keeping the project on schedule.

Equipment & Battery Performance

Cold weather doesn’t just impact people — it affects equipment too.Aerial lifts experienced shortened battery life in the freezing environment. To over come this, we staged additional lifts in a temperature-controlled area and rotated them in and out as needed. This logistical adjustment added complexity but ensured reliable operation throughout the project.

Condensation, Frost, and Ice Build-Up

Moisture and frost were constant obstacles. Adhesives and fasteners that perform well at room temperature often fail in freezer environments. Our team sourced attachment materials specifically rated for low-temperature adhesion, ensuring a durable and secure CCS installation.

Safety Considerations

Icy surfaces and temperature stress add unique safety concerns -lift stability, worker slips/falls, and equipment malfunctions are more common in freezing conditions. Our crews build in additional safety checks and pace work accordingly.

Cost Impact & Rate Transparency

Specialized environments come with added cost considerations — from reduced labor efficiency to higher equipment turnover and specialty materials.By explaining these factors upfront, we helped the client understand the pricing structure and the value behind a professionally executed CCS installation.

Material Selection: Metal vs. PlasticTies

For food and beverage facilities, we exclusively used metal ties instead of plastic. Metal is not only stronger in freezing conditions but also detectable by facility scanning systems, ensuring compliance with safety standards and preventing contamination risks.

Results: A Reliable CCS in ExtremeConditions

Despite the unique challenges of working in a freezer environment, Nusens successfully delivered a ceiling containment system that met the client’s safety, operational, and scheduling needs. By leveraging specialized materials, adaptive planning, and experienced crews, we provided a reliable solution built for one of the toughest environments in construction.

At Nusens, we understand that every facility is different. That’s why our approach is built on problem-solving, safety, and value-driven results - no matter the conditions.
